The author, after reporting the cases of thirty-nine patients with retinal detachment treated before the time of Gonin's operation and those of seventy-two patients treated according to Gonin's method, came to the following conclusions :

  • A consideration of the organic causes of retinal detachment is necessary before the application of adequate therapy. Every oculist who observes a retinal detachment should remember that he is dealing with a diseased body and that his task should not be limited to a verification of the extent of the detachment, of retinal tears, a clouding of the vitreous, hypotension or hemorrhages, but that it should be extended to an accurate history, laboratory tests and clinical examinations. Neither surgical treatment nor medical treatment alone is capable of permitting a true evaluation of relapses (relapse is synonymous with the persistence of a cause), or of a new method of treatment.
