ACCIDENTAL VACCINATION OF THE CONJUNCTIVA

Abstract

Accidental vaccination of the conjunctiva is a rare condition and as a rule is secondary to an infection of the margins of the lids. It occurs when vaccine material is unintentionally brought in contact with the lids of persons vaccinated or of those who are associated with them.

The early literature contains cases reported by Purtscher,1 Rost,2 Eagleton3 and Pihl.4 Bedell5 summarized the literature and collected reports of 93 cases which have been published since Jenner introduced vaccination in 1796. Cases were reported in more recent years by Ball and Toomey,6 Löhlein,7 Friede8 and Folk and Taube.9
