AN ANATOMICAL investigation on eyes of premature infants, with the purpose of finding the anatomical features of the earliest stage of retrolental fibroplasia, was started in 1951. A total of 114 eyes of 59 babies were examined. None of the infants had been examined ophthalmologically during life. The birth weights and the ages of the babies were as follows:
The earliest pathologic stages of the disease had already been described by Heath1; Tyner and Frayer2; Reese and Blodi3; Reese, Blodi, and Locke,4 and Friedenwald, Owens, and Owens.5 We found typical lesions of the first stage of the disease in six eyes of three children. The finding of three cases of retrolental fibroplasia in 59 unselected autopsies on premature infants confirms the opinion of von Winning6 that the incidence of the disease in the Netherlands is not below that in the United States.
