Introduction and Purpose
Growth of bones occurs (1) by endochondral bone formation as in the epiphyses, base of skull and mandibular condyle, (2) by sutural growth, and (3) by subperiosteal or appositional growth.1 Only in the skull are all three of these found. Intrinsic and extrinsic, as well as local and systemic factors, may affect skeletal growth centers. Growth of the nasal cartilaginous septum, the brain, and the orbital contents are supposed to influence growth of surrounding bones.2,3The purpose of this preliminary study of postnatal growth of the orbit and upper face after unilateral exenteration of the orbit in growing rabbits was not only to confirm and extend previous reports but also to establish a base for future work.
