This report is a clinicopathologic evaluation of 100 globes with retinoblastoma, 21 of which were treated by radiation, and six of which were photocoagulated as well. The remaining 79 eyes had received no treatment prior to enucleation, and provided an adequate control series for comparison with the treated globes.
Sections from 100 globes received consecutively at the pathology laboratory, Institute of Ophthalmology, from 1960 to 1964 were reviewed, and the histories later consulted. Of the 100 globes, 79 had received no therapy prior to surgical removal, and, with three exceptions, contained far advanced tumors. The remaining 21 globes were second eyes from patients with bilateral involvement and had been treated with roentgen radiation directed at the posterior segment; six of these 21 globes had been photocoagulated. Each of the patients from whom the globes were obtained had been examined at this hospital prior to the enucleation.
