For many years, our parent JAMA has conducted a question and answer department. This popular feature has recently supplied material for a bound volume containing selections from the prior year's content.
The Editorial Board of the Archives, at its annual meeting last April, decided to inaugurate on a trial basis a similar department which appears for the first time in this issue under the heading of "Queries."
The intent of this section is to provide expert answers to questions which cannot readily be resolved by reference to standard texts and current literature. Not all questions submitted by readers will be accepted for publication, although assistance may be given to a questioner to find out the answer for himself.
