Abstract

This small volume contains the proceeding of a symposium on glaucoma surveys held at the Royal College of Surgeons of England in June 1965, under the chairmanship of Prof E. S. Perkins. The first section consists of progress reports from six distinct chronic simple glaucoma screening programs conducted within the United Kingdom. The second section consists of four papers dealing with some aspects of epidemiology and management. Open discussions interspersed among the formal presentations tend to probe the underlying issues in depth and provide some lively reading material.

No new information of consequence emerged from this meeting. Basic difficulties inherent in standardization of methods, diagnostic criteria, and goals of chronic simple glaucoma surveys were brought into clear focus. It was well demonstrated that much confusion in this area is the result of our current inadequate knowledge of the natural history of chronic simple glaucoma.
