Abstract

To the Editor.  —All eye surgeons know the difficulty of explaining to patients why unilateral aphakia cannot be corrected with spectacles.I have found it invaluable to hand to such patients the following statement:

Advice to Patients Who Have Cataract Surgery in One Eye  When a person is operated on for cataract in one eye and not in the other, the two eyes cannot work together with spectacles. If a cataract glass were given only to the eye which was operated on it would see things as much larger than the unoperated on eye. So, your new glasses will be designed to give you clear vision in your eye which was operated on while purposely blurring your not operated on eye.The vision which you will obtain with your new cataract glasses will be different from that to which you have been accustomed. Objects will appear bigger, brighter, and bluer.
