This book is a gem. It offers a systematic development of the principles of Schiotz tonometry, applanation tonometry, and tonography. The fundamental contributions of Jonas Friedenwald are covered in depth, thereby laying the groundwork for a much needed critical analysis of tonography. The author has managed to present this complex material in a suprisingly lucid and readable fashion.
In the judgment of this reviewer, a proper understanding of tonometry and tonography is indispensable to all ophthalmologists. Certainly, the limitations of these tools and their potential sources of error should be widely appreciated. Gloster has now made it possible for us to acquire much of this information without having to spend countless hours poring over the formidable literature in this field. I would strongly recommend that this book be made required reading for all residents in ophthalmology.
