The annual report of the French Ophthalmological Society is one of the highlights of ophthalmic literature. The themes are assigned to one or several authors five to six years ahead of time, and the monograph that then appears is superbly executed, beautifully illustrated, and covers the topic in depth. The one which appeared in 1976 is no exception. It is a shining example of these beautiful reports.
The authors are Prof Pierre François of Lille and Prof Mireille Bonnet of Lyon. With a number of collaborators, they have brought together a great deal of information on the macula, have sorted it out, and evaluated it critically. The first two chapters deal with the embryology, anatomy, and physiology of the macula and the next two with the functional and physical examination.
The rest of the book is devoted to a discussion and illustration of the various macular diseases—degenerative, inflammatory, and metabolic.
