This book is one of the World Health Organization Technical Reports and emanated from a joint meeting of WHO and US Agency for International Development. It was prepared by a committee of experts representing many countries. The chairman was Dr D. S. McLaren from the American University of Beirut.

The monograph discusses vitamin A deficiency in general, but then focuses on the effect of this deficiency on the ocular structures. The report illustrates very clearly the effect of vitamin A deficiency on the conjunctival and corneal epithelium. It also gives a modern and useful classification of the condition. The latest scientific information on vitamin A is discussed, as well as the ecologic features, treatment, and prevention of xerophthalmia.

The report is based on a joint meeting held in Jakarta, Indonesia at the end of 1974. Interestingly, one of the contributors, J. J. M. Sauter, just published a companion book Xerophthalmia
