This is an important contribution to scientific ophthalmology. The editors are two distinguished professors of ophthalmology in London. Most of the contributors to the text are from the United Kingdom, but among the American authors are Douglas R. Anderson, Samuel B. Aronson, Stuart L. Fine, Herbert E. Kaufman, Robert L. Meyers, Arnall Patz, and R. C. Tripathi. Other contributors come from Germany, the Netherlands, Finland, Switzerland, Italy, Denmark, and Israel.
The first two sections of the book are on structure, ultrastructure, physiology, and biochemistry, and the discussions are especially valuable. A few topics were selected, but these are discussed in depth. They represent areas in which advances have recently been made and topics that should be of interest to any ophthalmologist who still regards ophthalmology as a science and not a craft.
