This book represents selected proceedings of the seventh biennial Cataract Surgical Conference, with 54 contributors in 15 sections, including discussions of intracapsular v extracapsular cataract extraction, phacoemulsification, intraocular lens (IOL) implantations (including calculation of power), techniques with various types of IOLs, complications, and correction of aphakia. Formal papers are followed by panel discussions, including those by A. Edward Maumenee, MD (recipient of the first Maumenee Gold Award), Robert C. Drews, MD, Miles A. Galin, MD, Louis J. Girard, MD, and Norman S. Jaffe, MD. Jaffe has performed more than 5,000 IOL implantations since December 1969. The discussions have a folksy informality that seems to be relatively unedited, including some facetious remarks that do not add to the sum of knowledge but give the impression of a clubby group of experts speaking off-the-cuff of their experiences and opinions.
