Abstract

This two-volume work is the distillation of a lifetime spent in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the retina and vitreous body by the leader in this field for the last 30 years.

Volume 1 contains a detailed description of the history, pathogenesis, methods of examination, differential diagnosis, and management of primary and reoperative rhegmatogenous retinal detachments. All modern methods of treatment are described, but (as is natural, since the book is written by a single author) the surgery and management sections reflect Dr Schepens' personal viewpoint and experience. The organization of this material is exemplary, allowing a lucid presentation of a difficult subject. This enables the reader to select individual topics in preoperative, operative, or postoperative management or to read the entire volume as a textbook.

Volume 2 encompasses complex and unusual cases of retinal detachment, including retinoschisis, various types of vitreoretinal degenerations, and nonrhegmatogenous detachments. The discussion
