Abstract

To the Editor.  —Any day now, I expect to open my mail and find a letter that states somthing like the following: "Dear Colleague: Due to the lack of sufficient current coverage of the subject, we are pleased to bring you the first issue of Hordeolum_"There seems to be a perception that ophthalmologists need more newsletters and more single-topic journals. The extraordinary number of new publications released over the last few years is troubling. It has become virtually impossible to even scan all relevant publications. Of added concern are the market analyses that suggest decreased readership of the older, "better" journals.There are many causes, including pressure to publish, slow turnaround time, lack of sufficient clinical significance or readability in the "better" journals, and a truly expanding specialty field. The problem is that there is a lot of important information out there, but the clinical ophthalmologist who needs it
