New Chairman Appointed.  —J. Terry Ernest, MD, PhD, was appointed chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Chicago and at Michael Reese Hospital, Chicago, on July 1. He succeeds Frank Newell, MD, and Manuel Stillerman, MD. Dr Ernest has been a professor of ophthalmology at the University of Illinois Eye and Ear Infirmary, Chicago, for the past three years and will retain his affiliation there as adjunct professor of ophthalmology. He will also continue his position as editor of the Yearbook of Ophthalmology.

Medical Malpractice Reform Agreement.  —The Illinois State Medical Society announces the elements of the final medical malpractice reform agreement by the Illinois Senate and House of Representatives. These elements include provisions that (1) allow for verdicts over $250,000 to be structured; (2) abolish the requirement for showing special damages to countersue for malicious prosecution; (3) create a three-member panel to screen medical malpractice cases
