Drusen

To the Editor.  —The article on drusen of the optic nerve associated with retinitis pigmentosa in the February Archives had a good presentation of the pathology.¹ It mentioned only one other such histologic study in 1858. We wish to draw attention to our reports in 1975² and 1982³ and discussion of such a case. Disc drusen were found in 2% of the eyes studied histologically in a consecutive series of 737 patients whose eyes were obtained at autopsy at Montefiore Hospital, New York. Among them were seven patients with retinitis pigmentosa, one of whom had disc drusen. No relationship was proved by that or in the single case reported by Puck et al,¹ as we expect that 2% of patients with retinitis pigmentosa would have disc drusen.
