Retina Research Award Presented.  —Harris Ripps, PhD, professor of ophthalmology and professor of anatomy and cell biology at the University of Illinois College of Medicine, Chicago, has been awarded the Retina Research Award of Merit by the Retina Research Foundation of Houston for his research on the subcellular basis of visual loss in patients with inherited retinal disease. The award consists of a $5000 personal honorarium and a $45 000 research grant.

Soviet Laser Beam.  —A Soviet intelligence vessel operating near the target zone of a Soviet missile test off Hawaii apparently aimed a laser beam at US surveillance aircraft, disturbing the vision of the copilot for ten minutes, the Defense Department said Friday.Senator Malcolm Wallop (R, Wyo), who first disclosed the incident in a Senate speech, said the aviator had been "temporarily blinded."A Pentagon statement said the copilot, whose identity and rank were not given, was
