This is a collection of reports presented at a workshop held in London in April 1985. This workshop was motivated, as Barrie Jay says in the introduction, by "considerable advances in our understanding of the normal development of vision and in our ability to detect and measure visual impairment in early childhood." The participants, all from European centers, represented both clinicians and vision scientists with expertise in electrophysiologic and psychophysical testing of the vision of infants and young children.
The material has been organized into five sections. The most extensive coverage is given to the measurement of visual acuity in preverbal children. Other sections consider the normal development of vision and the causes of visual impairment, the theoretical aspects of electrophysiologic and psychophysical tests, and approaches to screening preverbal children for visual disorders.
