—We read with interest the recent article by Hupp.1 In addition to the reported partial recovery of macular function, we believe that his case also illustrates a protective effect by the fovea against phototoxic injury. Both the fundus photograph and fluorescein angiogram show attenuation of the lesion at the margin adjacent to the fovea. We reviewed the literature describing reports of photic retinal lesions caused by the operating microscope. We were able to find numerous instances of photic lesion
