Thompson and McDonnell have put together an excellent 158-page color atlas and text on the status of excimer laser surgery in 1993. Chapters by 18 pioneering research and clinical experts in refractive surgery are complemented by 126 color plates and over 100 black-and-white figures and graphs. I found the book easy to read and review due to its organization, well-written text, and outstandingly clear and beautiful figures and color prints.
The foreward by Stephen Trokel, MD, is followed by a discussion by Francis L'Esperance, MD, of the history and development of the excimer laser. He reviews the beam delivery systems of the Taunton (Taunton Technologies Inc, Sunnydale, Calif), Visx (Visx Corporation, Sunnyvale), and Summit (Summit Technology Inc, Waltham, Mass) lasers and includes two pages of drawings depicting the myopic, hyperopic, and astigmatic wheels. Animal and human studies are also briefly discussed.
