On the urging of Richard P. Carroll, MD, the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ASOPRS) initiated a silver anniversary commerative history. The Archives Committee and many other individuals associated with ASOPRS contributed to the information contained in this volume, with the most significant event in the creation of this work being the invitation of Dr Reifler to assume primary authorship.
The 488-page Festschrift consists of two major parts: the first, authored by Dr Reifler, is titled History of Ophthalmic Plastic Surgery: 2500 bc-ad 1994, while the second, The First Twenty-Five Years, is extensively organized by the editor with 32 other contributors. Each section could stand alone as a significant and unique monograph. Together, they provide the best cumulative history of the field and document the place of ASOPRS in the evolution of the subspecialty.
