In this issue of the Archives we institute a new section, "Mechanisms of Ophthalmic Disease," concentrating on basic science areas that are of relevance to the clinical practice of ophthalmology. Our goal is to have short reviews focusing on topics in the visual sciences where the principles and understanding have solidified in recent years. These will be written by preeminent scientists in each particular field. More important, they will be addressed not to the basic scientist, but to the clinician with curiosity about the underpinnings of ophthalmic disease.

Articles in this section will ordinarily be invited by the section editor. Unsolicited manuscripts that are particularly suited to this section will be considered as well. All manuscripts will undergo the same rigorous peer review provided to all submissions to the Archives.
