Example pedigree showing a continuously distributed trait of refraction

Arch Ophthalmol. 2007;125(1):5. doi:10.1001/archopht.125.1.5

Traditional pedigree diagrams display disease status as absent or present. Many research questions, however, address continuous traits rather than diseases. By using shades of color, this pedigree diagram represents the continuous trait of refraction, one of the traits studied in the article by Klein et al in this issue (see page 80). Kristine E. Lee, MS, University of Wisconsin, Madison, designed this display of a continuous trait on a pedigree diagram for this theme issue. Our February issue will continue the ophthalmic genetics theme articles and provide more information in this area.
