Diagnosis: Riedel thyroiditis
Riedel thyroiditis is a rare chronic disease that is characterized by a fibroinflammatory process that infiltrates and obliterates the normal thyroid gland.1,2 The resulting dense fibrous process can cause thyroid enlargement and invade local soft tissues, mimicking invasive thyroid cancer. It may occur as an isolated disease entity or be associated with other fibrosing diseases, including retroperitoneal fibrosis, mediastinal fibrosis, and orbital pseudotumor.3- 5 In the current case, the patient was subsequently found to have mediastinal fibrosis as well.
