It is with a real appreciation of the honor and importance of the office that I wish to thank the members of this Section for permitting me to serve as chairman during the past year. I can assure you of my deep personal appreciation; but more important, I appreciated this as a recognition of bronchoesophagology in otolaryngology. It is my sincere hope that we live up to the traditions of the Section outlined by our revered Dr. Coates last year and as exemplified by the career of our distinguished guest of honor, Dr. Clerf. His medical and surgical skills, his teaching, and his writings have created his place in medical history. His guidance, his encouragement, and his comradeship have influenced our specialty and all who have known him or heard him. The Section is honored by his presence here.
