External Baffle for Tracheostomy CannulaProtection of Personnel from Contamination by Coughed Secretions

Abstract

Tracheostomy is a frequent life-saving procedure. Personnel attending patients so treated are often struck in the face and eyes by droplets of pus explosively expelled during coughing. Staphylococcus infections

A standard tracheostomy cannula has been modified to reduce this possibility by placing a removable metal baffle ½ inch (14 mm.) from the cannula opening as shown in Figure 1 *. The baffle is 27 mm. in diameter, easily cleaned in situ, or rotated to one side for tube care, cleansing, or removal (Fig. 2).
