Wilfred Batten Lewis Trotter 1872 to 1939His Legacy to Pharyngeal Surgeons

Arch Otolaryngol. 1973;97(5):423-425. doi:10.1001/archotol.1973.00780010435018
Abstract

By clarifying the natural history of pharyngeal neoplasia, Trotter established the basis for advances in the treatment of this disease. He separated the origin of pharyngeal cancer into five anatomic regions: nasopharynx, oropharynx, epilarynx, pyriform sinus, and hypopharynx. Because he understood characteristic tumor pathology, he insisted that all involved tissue, regardless of anatomic boundaries, be removed. The acceptance of his surgical premises changed the prognosis of patients with pharyngeal cancers from hopeless to hopeful.
