As my tenure as journal editor comes to a close at the end of December, I felt compelled to share with our readership a few final words. It has been an educational and interesting opportunity to have been chosen as the editor by Cathy DeAngelis, MD, more than 10 years ago and to be able to continue in that role under her successor, Howard Bauchner, MD.
During this period, the changes in the journal and those of the JAMA Network have mirrored those of organized medicine, focusing on systems, standardization, and the increasing use of computer technology. I was given the opportunity to assist in making the reworking of our journal a reality and learning along the way of the complexities, challenges, and the future of producing a medical publication that is contemporary and educational. Our journal and the Network to which it belongs have become quite facile in adjusting to the changing educational needs and learning styles of the modern physician.
