In accordance with current treatment standards, acute otitis media with tympanostomy tubes (AOMT) in children is treated with antibiotics either alone or in combination with corticosteroids. Spektor et al conducted a 2-center randomized clinical trial with a total of 662 children to evaluate the efficacy of ciprofloxacin in combination with fluocinolone compared with ciprofloxacin or fluocinolone alone. They found that children treated with both ciprofloxacin and fluocinolone had a significantly shorter median time to cessation of otorrhea compared with children treated with ciprofloxacin or fluocinolone alone. The authors conclude that the combination of ciprofloxacin plus fluocinolone is more effective than ciprofloxacin or fluocinolone alone in the treatment of AOMT in children.
