In this analysis, Shayman et al use census tract–level data from the nationwide American Community Survey to investigate geographic disparities for US veterans in accessing cochlear implant facilities in the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) system. They found that more than 80% of veterans in 7 states resided more than 180 miles from the nearest VHA facility providing cochlear implant services, including sites that offer only audiologic services. They conclude that placement of new facilities may help ensure appropriate care for this high-risk population.
