I am writing in response to the Commentary by Dr Meyers1 that appeared in the September 2002 issue of the ARCHIVES. In it, he describes the reduction in the number of applicants to otolaryngology residency programs over the last 4 years, and he gives 3 reasons for this reduction. The second reason, the lack of flexibility in our training, is the focus of this letter.
