A COMPARATIVE STUDY OF CHRONIC SINUSITIS: WITH END-RESULTS FOLLOWING INTRANASAL OPERATIONS

Abstract

I shall present a study of a group of cases of chronic sinusitis limited to cases of (1) chronic suppurative sinusitis; (2) chronic hyperplastic ethmoiditis, and (3) polypoid degeneration of the mucosa. In the cases presented, the ethmoids were involved alone or together with one or more of the other sinuses; therefore, chronic empyema of the maxillary sinus per se is not included in this group.

The studies of the cases are made in the following order: (1) the chief complaint; (2) history; (3) clinical inspection—direct and indirect view with the nasopharyngoscope; (4) transillumination; (5) x-ray and laboratory work when indicated. In many cases, the examination is not complete without a visual acuity test, an examination of the fundus and an examination of the visual field.
