Recruitment Testing

A basic requirement for a new test designed, like the loudness balance test, to separate various clinical groups of deafness is that there must be a significant statistical difference between the mean values for the different categories. If the figures characteristic of the two principal groups, recruiting and nonrecruiting deafness, fall within one standard deviation, there is no justification for giving the test any diagnostic value. And although it ought to be clear that each proposed test should have had a thorough comparison with a direct loudness balance test, this has been omitted oftener than included.
