The training of future otolaryngologists is a pressing and immediate problem. Not only is there a dearth of young otolaryngologists, but the demand for those terminating their residency training in approved institutions has become so competitive as to result in offers of fantastic salaries and many other tangible benefits. In fact, these offers have become so attractive that the future teachers and research workers in the specialty are being lost permanently at a time when there is the greatest need for them.
It is paradoxical that, after two decades of unprecedented expansion and scientific advancement in our specialty and with the demand for trained otolaryngologists far exceeding the supply, there should be so few medical students and interns planning to embark on a career in otolaryngology or one of its numerous subspecialties.
