Medical audiology in 1963 is highlighted by efforts to change the "zero" reference level on audiometers so as to conform to the level recommended by the International Standard Organization (ISO).1 The proposed new reference level and how it alters our present thresholds is shown in the Table. Almost all frequencies have a different correction factor but the average for the frequencies 500, 1,000, and 2,000 cps comes to 11 db. These changes are far reaching and affect otology, industry, and even law. As might be expected there are advantages and disadvantages inherent in any new standard. We recommend a careful review of the subject so that otologists can give a considered judgment on the advisability of adopting this new audiometric reference level.
