To the Editor: Four years have elapsed since our first publication (Nueva teoría etiopatogénica de la otoesclerosis: Areas de osteogénesis en la capsula laberintica parcialmente necrosada, Anales Oto-Rino-Laring [Uruguay] 31:63-91, 1961), and during this time experience of new histological facts has been gained.
Material
Fifty labyrinthine capsules of patients between the ages of 3 to 60 years old.
Fifty stapes from stapedectomies in otosclerotic patients.
Fifty stapes from normal subjects (autopsy material).
Bone chips from fenestration "cupula."
Labyrinthine capsules in several mammalia: five rabbits, three dogs, one cat, and one monkey (Macacus rhesus).
Several fragments from tibial diaphysis and necrotic areas of fractured bones (for traumatic and tumoral reasons).
Experimental aseptic necrosis in tibial bone of rats and the process of rehabitation with new bone.
Methods
The following staining methods were used: hematoxylin and eosin, Sudan IV, oil red, Feulgen, Wilder, PAS, and serial sections of specimens.
