To the Editor: I have learned that you found the name of Dr. Ernst Gold missing in my Historical Vignette about the work of Theodor Billroth. I am very sorry that I failed to mention the merits of the colleague Gold who is still working in New York. On the other hand, please try to understand that in my historical survey I had, indeed, to limit myself to Billroth exclusively. Had I in addition gone into the work of his pupils in more detail, the article would have exceeded its appropriate limits, for we surely all know that great and praiseworthy things could be said about von Mikulicz, Sauerbruch, Volker, and many of Billroth's other students. If then I did not mention Dr. Gold any furher I did not at all mean to say that his work should not be ranked in the forefront.
