THIS PAPER describes two experimental studies on extralaryngeal muscles of the larynx. Both focus on the sternothyroid and thyrohyoid muscles. The first investigation is primarily basic physiology while the second is clinical in nature. The idea of developing a corrective procedure for unilateral paralysis of the cricothyroid muscle, the second study, was truly serendipidous, a consequence of the findings of a basic research project.
Physiological Properties of the Sternothyroid and Thyrohyoid Muscles
An increasing interest in the activity of the extralaryngeal muscles has been demonstrated in the past decade. Although some studies have been limited to an examination of the respiratory function of these muscles,1,2 the majority of investigators have concerned themselves with the role of the extrinsic laryngeal muscles in phonation.
