Abstract

The results of a careful evaluation of taste sensation in 52 stapedectomy patients with chorda tympani lesions revealed a most interesting finding: a hypogeusia where only the acid sensation was preserved. The possibility of an alternate pathway for taste fibers between the extratemporal chorda tympani and the geniculate ganglion is suggested. The importance of performing both electrogustometry and chemical gustometry for the correct evaluation of taste is emphasized.
