Four hundred sixty-four auditory evoked response (AER) traces obtained during sleep from 16 clinical and four normal children aged 2 to 68 months were scored twice by three observers for the presence or absence of a response. Intraobserver agreement ranged from 59% to 75% of traces and the three observers were in substantial agreement on 49%. Both intraobserver and interobserver agreement was greater for AER collected at high sensation levels than at low ones in normal controls and normal hearing clinical subjects. Auditory evoked responses collected during desynchronized sleep gave rise to significantly more equivocal judgments than any other sleep stage or the waking state.
