Audiograms showing elevated high-frequency hearing levels for 91 children in kindergarten through grade 12 were studied from a population of 1,516 South Dakota school children. Results showed that high-frequency elevation was present in 6% of the population. The average elevation was 58 dB with a standard deviation of 14 dB and the correlation between incidence of high-frequency elevation and grade level was low (0.12), but statistically significant. The incidence was not cumulative over the 13 years, peaking at grades 3 and 12. Correlation between maximum elevation and grade level was low (0.20) and not significant. About two thirds of subjects showed 6,000 Hz as a most involved frequency. About five times more boys than girls suffered high-frequency elevation.
