This review focuses on the history of therapy of cancer of the larynx. The perfection of indirect laryngoscopy and biopsy by Morell MacKenzie, the first laryngectomies by Theodor Billroth, the tragedy of Crown Prince Frederick of Germany, perfection of laryngectomy and neck dissection, the development of orthovoltage and supervoltage radiotherapy, and the recent combination of radiation and surgery are the exciting highlights of this history which covers 140 years.
