Middle fossa eustachian tuboplasty is a practical procedure for dealing with boney or fibrous tissue closure of the osseous segment of the tube. Preoperative evaluation consists of using one of the clinical tests available for eustachian tube function. The three most dependable are the Miller gas transducer, the Madsen impedance bridge, and the Compere x-ray clearance study.
If the site of lesion can be pinpointed in the osseous tube, the middle fossa procedure allows the surgeon to reconstruct the tube and stimulate regrowth of normal mucous membrane from the cartilagenous tube. Results in a small series of patients have been rewarding. Morbidity is low with minimal discomfort to the patients.
