This volume is the first English edition of a Japanese text originally published in 1968. The most important and fortunately the largest part of the book consists of a superb monograph on equilibrium function tests (including electronystagmography), which is well organized, clearly written, and very well illustrated. Other portions of the book are shorter, weaker, and disturbingly obsolescent. The small chapter on audiology does not include acoustic impedance testing; the chapter on radiology does not mention polytomography or computerized tomographic scanning. The extensive bibliography has surprising omissions and includes no references later than 1973.
Despite these imperfections, this volume is recommended as a basic diagnostic neuro-otology text for residents in otolaryngology, neurology, and neurosurgery and it would also be valuable for practicing physicians in those specialties. This book would be a desirable addition to all otolaryngology libraries.
