Abstract

Excerpta Medica Services has sponsored the development of the Antibiotics Indications Device—AID™, which serves as a convenience aid to selecting the most appropriate antibiotic agent for common infections. This aid and the accompanying booklet was prepared under the direction of a committee that was headed by Dr Maxwell Finland, the noted professor of medicine at Harvard University, Cambridge, Mass. Other members of the committee included Drs Theodore C. Eickhoff, George E. Farrar, Jr, George G. Jackson, Harold C. Neu, Charles R. Ream, and Louis Weinstein. The device works very much like a slide rule that allows one to determine quickly the antibiotic of first choice, supplemental therapy, and alternate therapy for common infections. It includes not only the identity of the drug but the dosage and method of administration. This device and the accompanying booklet should serve as a valuable tool for anyone who provides primary medical care.
