This text on the Diseases of the Temporomandibular Apparatus is an attempt by Morgan and colleagues to gather a compendium of all authors' views or subjects on the temporomandibular joint complaint under one cover. The subjects that are presented run from developmental embryology through diagnosis and treatment to the legal aspects of this complaint. In reading this text, one is impressed that he/she is reviewing a collection of chapters rather than an organized review of a symptom complex. The emphasis of each chapter seems to be lost in the text by restatement, complexity of presentation, and division of editorial thesis. To illustrate this point, the text fails to present in the initial chapters to the reader a definition or classification of the disease entity. This appears in chapters 12 and 13 in the middle of the text under differential diagnosis for only 12 pages. The second example of this editorial
