Dr Louis H. Clerf celebrated his 100th birthday on January 8, 1989. Because of his dedication to the highest ideals of medicine and in recognition of his commitment to excellence in teaching and patient care, it is appropriate for us to dedicate this issue of the Archives to Dr Clerf. This comes at a time when many of his former students and colleagues are campaigning for Dr Clerf's election to the Hall of Honor of the state of Washington. Speaking on his behalf for that particularly high honor, F. Johnson Putney, MD, Charleston, SC, stated, "He certainly deserves the honor, for his contributions in his chosen profession have been outstanding and perhaps unequalled.... He was recognized both nationally and internationally as the preeminent leader in the field, more especially in laryngology, especially as related to cancer. His colleagues considered him tops and frequently called on him for advice and instruction...."
