Hayes Martin was born on a small farm in northwestern Iowa (Dayton) on June 24, 1892. From these small beginnings he became the leader in the development of surgical treatment and management strategies for a kind of cancer that very few surgeons would operate on in those days. Now the members of our Society treat it successfully every day. Back in those days, the unfortunate patients who had this type of cancer would undergo primitive radiation and radium therapy, with dismal results in most cases.
