Photographer: Alan Lipkin, MD, Denver, Colorado. Monument Valley, encompassing parts of southern Utah and northern Arizona, is situated within the Navajo Nation reservation. In addition to sandstone pinnacles and buttes, it has wide areas of desert sands and mesas. In popular culture, it is known from the John Wayne western movies directed by John Ford, including Stagecoach and The Searchers, and is also the place where Forrest Gump ended his run. This image includes typical sandstone formations, including one called the Totem Pole, on the right side. Sunrise photographs are best obtained with the assistance of a native guide.
